Deciding my job became a turning point in my life. I didn’t think about choosing my current job before that but unexpectedly chose to become a public officer.
Entering university, I chose history as a major although my parents dissuaded me not to choose history because they thought getting a job would be difficult after graduation. At that time, due to lack of sense of reality, I only thought my interest. I was dreaming to become a professor of history in university.
However, as soon as I entered university, I realized my vague dream was difficult to come true. I knew that I should study for a long time and have enough money to become a professor. Therefore, I adjusted my dream to become a history teacher. I studied subjects which are necessary to become a teacher.
After finishing military service, I again worried about my future. To become a teacher, I had to pass a test to be selected as a potential teacher. However, the government didn’t give the test in history subject for over 3 years. I thought that it could become a waste of precious time to prepare becoming a teacher. In addition, for my university life, I always in need and disliked concerning money. At that time, my girl friend who graduated from university was preparing public officer exam. She said that studying for one year was enough to pass the exam, so I decided to prepare a public officer exam. I wanted to go to university comfortably without worrying about money after passing exam. In fact, I didn’t think about being a public officer before that because I thought the job was very boring.
Anyway, after I passed the public officer test in the 4th year, I have already worked for 13 years. Although this job was not my first dream, I am satisfied with my job.

The change of hairstyles
Hairstyles are one of the important personal aesthetics, and hairstyles have been changed according to the times.
In Chosun Dynasty, people raised their hair all their life. At that time, men as well as women should raise their hair. Because they were influenced by Confucianism, people thought they should not hurt their body, hair and skins which are received by parents. People braided their hair until getting married. When they got married, men tied up a topknot and women tied up and raised hair. In the Royal palace, women placed fake hair on their hair to show authority.
In 1895, there was an announcement about cutting hair. At first, people resisted against the new policy because their personal beliefs wasn’t changed. However, as time went on, people’s consciousness gradually changed. Going through the Japanese colonial era and the Korean War, short hairstyles perfectly got settled.
In 1970s, long hairstyles prevailed among young generation. At that time, blue jeans, guitar, beer and long hairstyle were symbols of youth and resistance due to the influence of foreign hippie culture. Sometimes, young men with too long hair were forced to cut their hair by policeman on the street.
Today, hairstyles are free to every people. Hairstyles became one of the most important methods to express personality. Some men raise their hair like women, and some women cut their hair shortly like men. Some people dye their hair in various colors to show personality.
As we can see from the above cases, hairstyles reflect on the phases of the times and became the most important personal aesthetics.

The difference of behavior between men and women
Men and women show lots of differences in behavior according to their gender. Although aspects of individual behavior come from personal characteristics, generally we can see common things in same gender. I’d like to explain several behaviors from my experience as follows.
Firstly, we can find differences when people use purse. Generally, men’s purse is very simple, so men have identification card, at most 3 cards and some cash. However, if we open women’s purse, we can see lots of different kinds of cards such as credit cards, cash back cards and each shops discount cards. I sometimes wonder whether women can remember every card in case they lose purse.
Secondly, shopping and calling show distinct differences between men and women. Men usually think what they buy and what they tell before go shopping and calling. Men only do planned things, so men finish their shopping and calling in a short time. On the other hand, women’s shopping and calling become longer than their planning. Sometimes, women spend lots of time in shopping and talking, but, after all, they know it is not what they wanted. Therefore, women create another shopping and calling demand.
Finally, when people receive a receipt at a shop or restaurant, men and women’s behavior are different. Men, after checking only the total amount or sometimes without checking amount, go out. In contrast, women check every item and total amount before going out.
From above several cases, we can infer fun characteristics. While men dislike complexity and try to avoid it, women seem to enjoy complexity.

Mandatory retirement
Today, I’d like to say why mandatory retirement is necessary. In modern society, mandatory retirement is essential to enhance social and economical efficiencies. Even if there are some differences according to company regulations, nearly every company runs mandatory retirement system. Mandatory retirement is useful from the viewpoint of individual, society and organization.
First, in individual side, as people get older, their physical and mental ability weaken. It is difficult to expect that older workers conduct their job efficiently without any problems.
Second, in society side, mandatory retirement provides younger people with opportunity of employment, so mandatory retirement reduce unemployment rate of the youth.
Finally, in organization side, mandatory retirement makes organization active by providing promotion opportunity to younger workers. Organization is like a blood vessel in our body, so organization needs smooth circulation of human resources.
Therefore, I’d like to say that mandatory retirement is very desirable and recommendable system.
Mandatory retirement provides younger people with opportunity of employment. As you know, nowadays youth unemployment becomes serious social problems in our society. There is statistics that 20% young people are unemployed. That is to day, one out of 5 young people have not their job. This rate is two times of total unemployment rate. Youth unemployment is caused by various reasons, but lack of job is the most fundamental reasons.
Mandatory retirement creates job opportunities for younger people. Therefore, mandatory retirement can contribute to reduce unemployment rate of younger people. In addition, older workers receive lots of wages, so if one older worker retired, at least two younger people could get their jobs.
Please think! Your capable son and daughter graduated university 2 years ago, and they are studying from dawn to midnight to get a job. However, 60 or 70 old people have already occupied every job. This situation makes your son and daughter jobless people. Do you want this situation?
- Economic burden of pensioners should be settled by arranging pension system.
- We have limited jobs, but job demand much larger than supply. Therefore we have to make a choice whether we provide jobs to younger people or to weaken older people.
- Older people should give young people the job, and they should prepare secondary life such as self employed job and volunteer.
- Of course, development of medical technology improved older people’s health and abilities. Sometimes we can see that experienced and capable people’s mandatory retirement is very regretful. However, we should maintain mandatory retirement system as principle of society and organization. This principle maintains our society healthy. If we really need aged experienced people, exceptionally, we could employ as special employment.
- Generally, most outstanding characteristic of organization is hierarchy. Every techniques and know-how can be transferred to subordinates by working together. If mandatory retirement abolished, every people don’t try to transfer their know-how to their co-workers and subordinates to keep on working. Probably people hide their personal know-how. This could hurt development of organization.

The courage of the Martin Luther King
Many people recently reflect Martin Luther King through the Barak Obama. People say King’s dream came true by an African American becoming a new president of America. Martin Luther King was authentic activist for civil right in USA. Especially, he tried to advocate African American’s civil rights for all his life.
King was born as a son of a minister on January 15 in 1929. Although Lincoln had liberated slaves through the Civil War victory, at that time, there existed a lot of racial discrimination in USA. For example, African American had to give up their seats to the white people in the bus, and even highly educated African American couldn’t have the rights to vote or serve on juries.
In 1954, King became a minister, and by this time, he was working as a member of organization for advancement of African American. At that time, a trigger happened in Montgomery, which became the starting point of civil right movement for African American. A Black female was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to white man. King led boycott to secure equal rights in the bus for 382 days. After all, he ended racial segregation on all Montgomery bus through the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States. After that, his civil right movement continued.
During his activity, he faced hundreds of death threats and his house was bombed. However, he didn’t give up his work. Although he suffered from lots of violence, he continuously insisted nonviolence protest due to influence from Gandi. As a result, in 1964, he became the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial discrimination.
Besides the Nobel Peace Prize, he has influenced to American. He made a speech ‘I have a dream’. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” This address is recognized as one of the famous speeches in the 20th century. After he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, the third Monday in January is designated as American national holiday in memory of his birth. Although he was dead, his thought and dream are being remembered and coming true.
Effective approach to learning English
Numerous people study English in the world and many people try to search for the most effective method in learning English. We can see in the internet that a lot of experts and individuals suggest their best ways to study English. I’d like to add another good ways as follows.
First, people should have clear purpose of studying English. According to their reason of studying, the direction of studying and textbook will be different. For example, people who prepare studying abroad should study the TOEFL, whereas people who want to learn practical English for using in company should study the TOEIC.
Second, repetitive practice and memorizing is essential. Even though many people used to select English textbooks, there aren’t so many people to study the textbook from start to finish. Advertising experts say that people should see advertisement at least three times for the advertisement to have an effect on the viewer. It is same to learn language. Learning a language basically require memorizing more than comprehension. Therefore, after memorizing useful expressions and vocabulary, practicing the expressions in the real life is helpful to enhance English ability in a short time.
Finally, comprehensive approach to the studying is important. Sometimes people used to have a prejudice that speaking is more important than any other things, so they only practice speaking. In my experience, that type of studying is very foolish. In studying English, everything such as speaking, listening, reading and writing is important. Reading provides people with various expressions and conversation source. Through writing, people can arrange their thoughts about some topics. People can double their English ability through speaking and listening due to cultural exchange. As a result, balancing each part in studying is necessary.
To learn English is difficult process. It needs a lot of effort and time. By following above ways, people could reduce trial and error in learning English.

Negotiating a project
Dear Sir or Madams:
I’m writing to ask for your company’s suggestion about Seoul Metropolitan Government’s new project.
Our government is trying to enhance Seoul’s attraction by developing Han River. Han River has endless potential, but until now Seoul has not developed abundant potential. As a plan of Han River developing project, the government is considering a possibility of establishing a hotel on the Han River. Over-water hotel might be able to attract a lot of tourists, so it would contribute to make Han River one of the most attractive places in Seoul. The government is planning to give an opportunity to build and operate over-water hotel to a private company which wishes to participate in the project, but after 20 years, the private company has to transfer proprietary rights to the government. I’d like to hear your opinion as soon as possible.
Regards, Taylor.
Dear Taylor,
Thank you for your e-mail. Our company thinks the Seoul Metropolitan Government made a great decision. Although developing Han River is sufficiently possible by means of modern technology, there weren’t positive efforts to develop Han River until now. With reference to your offer, our company welcomes to have opportunities to build and operate over-water hotel. However, after 20 years, transferring proprietary rights to Seoul City Hall should be considered again. Actually, private company has to invest a lot of money for establishing the hotel at the beginning. In addition, private company has to reinvest to maintain the facilities best condition. If private company has to transfer the proprietary rights after 20 years, they will not reinvest as year goes by and it will make bigger problem. So, our company wishes Seoul City Hall to guarantee continuing proprietary rights to private company.
Best wishes, Andrea

Change the planning
To whom it may concern:
We had made a decision to build the Seoul Global Center and contracted with your company about remodeling the Press Center, the 3th floor and preparing on opening event. We think your company would have already lunched the design.
However, it is necessary for us to change the first plan because there were several new orders at the board meeting. Firstly, we have to add new functions such as cultural exchange room, business help center in the Seoul Global Center. Secondly, we have to enlarge the opening event. At first, we planned to invite several foreigners concerned, but realized that we have to invite ambassadors who live in Korea, foreign residents who live in Hannam-dong, Ichon-dong and Itaeweon-dong and celebrities for the promotion.
We wonder if you could meet a dead line when the plan is changed as described above and we would like to know how much budget would increase. We look forward to receiving your reply as soon as possible.
Sincerely yours,
Cho, Sung-ho
My objective
I have one objective to achieve this semester. That is improving my English listening skill, because I realized listening is my weak point at UCI.
Before I went to UCI, I mainly focused on speaking. I didn’t feel any problem listening in Korea, because foreign teachers adjusted their speech speed for students in the class. However, I had difficulty in understanding the class at UCI.
To improve listening skill, I’m considering several methods. First, I will listen to TOEIC listening comprehension tape during the commute time everyday. I think that repetitive practices about various short expressions will improve listening skill naturally. No matter how simple a sentence is, it might be difficult to understand speech if I’ve never heard the sentence.
Second, I will listen to famous person’s address such as American presidents, Steve Jops, Obama and Hillary. Because their addresses are usually well organized and their pronunciation is relatively accurate, listening the address will be helpful.
Finally, I will try to watch English news at home as many as possible. Although English news is very fast, repetitive watching will improve listening skill and I can get a lot of information about current issues. Through the listening practices, I anticipate I could watch American movies without caption at the end of this semester.

Thinks I like to do in this semester
There are several things I most like to do in this semester.
One of them is improving my English listening skill, because I realized listening is my weak point at UCI. I’m thinking about several methods to improve English listening skill. I will listen to TOEIC LC tape in the commute time everyday. In addition, I will listen to famous person’s address such as Steve Jops, Obama and Hellary. Finally, I will try to watch English news at home as many as possible.
Another thing I’d like to do is going to trip with my family. I plan to go some places around Seoul such as Yang Pyeong or Ga Pyeong during weekend. Another thought is going to Jeju island using flight mileage. Finally, although cost is expensive, I could plan to go abroad during January vacation next year.
Last thing I most like to do is going to various special restaurants and taste delicious food. Italian restaurant near my house is one of the special restaurants. That restaurant always serves delicious food. Although cost is too expensive, beef restaurant is one of the restaurants that I most like to visit. Finally, I would like to visit famous restaurant that have ever been introduced by broadcast.
I would like to make this semester more precious by enhancing my English ability and having a lot of time with family.

Effect of factory on the small town

The new factory will have several effects on the town.
First of all, a large factory will bring several positive effects on the small town. For one thing, people live in the town could have more opportunity of employment because new factory provide people with jobs. In addition, the small town will gradually develop due to growth of new other business. The factory also helps people increase income.
On the other hand, we can predict several negative effects on the small town. Many new people will get into the small town, so the town may lose calm and safety. Also, new large factory will bring about environmental pollution. And then, harmony between neighbors might break because of conflict between conservative neighbors and progressive neighbors.
Consequently, to obtain positive effects and minimize negative effects on the town, people live in the town should organize temporally team to prepare problems could happen in the future.

Trip to Hawaii

Hi friend.
I am looking forward to taking a trip to Hawaii with you. Fortunately a few days ago, I found advertisements about Hawaii travel packages in the newspaper.
I explain two travel packages to you : plan A and plan B. Plan A and plan B have several things in common. Firstly, plan A includes welcome party and so does plan B. Both packages provide deluxe hotel accommodations. Plan A visits the same islands, Oahu and Maui as plan B. Both packages include transportation to and from airport.
However, plan B is much longer than plan A. Plan A is 8 days, 7 nights. On the other hand, plan B is 15 days, 14 nights. So the price of plan B is much more expensive than that of plan A. Plan A is 1,799$, but plan B is 2,899$. In my opinion, it is better to choose plan A, considering our vacation time and cost. Moreover, plan A includes guided tours around each island which isn’t offered by plan B. I expect your reply about package choice.

Stating my opinion

In my opinion, it is harmful for mothers with small children to work outside of the house. First, there can be emotional disturbance to the children. Many experts say that children who have longer time with their mother have better emotional development. Second, children are always exposed to the various dangers for lack of judgments. Third, children who are apart from their mother usually have problems of sociality lack because sociality is based on the intimacy with family.
In my opinion, modern architecture is ugly. First reason, modern architecture too emphasizes practicality ignoring artistic quality. Second reason, modern architecture is too identical. As the result, each architecture does not have characteristic. Third reason, modern architecture uses too many harmful materials. So architecture has a harmful influence to modern people.
On the other hand, there is another view that modern architecture is not ugly. According to that view, there are several reasons. First, modern architecture emphasizes design. So, unique architecture matching the spirit of the times is created. Second, modern architecture improves urban environments for being harmony with the surroundings. Third, modern architecture uses green materials.
There is view that UFOs(unidentified flying objects) do exist. They present several reasons. First, there are many witnesses who have seen the unidentified flying objects. Second, there are many symptoms that science can’t explain in the world. Third, there exist pictures or moving pictures about UFO.
But in my opinion, UFOs don’t exist. First reason, existence of UFOs were not proved scientifically. Second reason, people sometimes think that they have seen something that does not exist. Third reason, there are many faked photos and moving pictures in the world.
In my opinion, smoking should be banned in restaurants. For one thing, smoking in restaurant gives unpleasant feeling to near people who would like to enjoy pleasant mood. In addition, smoking hurt neighbor’s health. According to experts’ opinions, indirect smoking is more harmful to health. Third, bad smell in a restaurant hurt fine environment.
In my opinion, nuclear energy is the best way to meet our energy needs. First, it is possible to get amount of energy using small materials because energy efficiency of nuclear energy is high. Second, nuclear energy safeguards environment of the earth because it does not produce carbon dioxide. Third, nuclear energy can replace a natural resource in the future.
